I hope you all had a wonderful holiday and happy new year. I noticed so many people taking stock of 2008, and so I thought I'd put my own spin to this.
First of all, stats....I love buckeyeoutdoors.com - I just started using it in early March, so I only have 9 months of stats, but here goes:
- 357 miles ran
- 69 miles walked
- 697 miles biked
- 16 miles swam
Oh, you can definitely tell my weakness here! But, I'm amazed that I have even been able to keep up the training log. Thank you all for helping me keep at it in 2008.
I'm not sure what 2009 will bring. My right knee has been bothersome when I run. Feels kind of like torn meniscus situation - ugh. I hope it's just soreness, as I'm not into doing another surgery this year. I also love to run outdoors, but I've acquired a terrible allergy to the outdoors in the winter and spring times of the year here in Austin, which forces me to stay indoors. I wonder if I'm ever going to get over these darn allergies (something I've never had before in my life).
I have discovered a new love though in 2008 - my bike trainer! $89 at Performance Bikes (plus tax) has been one of my favorite forms of exercise. I have a ton of movies to watch, and more importantly, it's so much more convenient to have something at home to do, when you have a young child. I do need to start building a better base, so that I will be ready for summer!
Swimming...well, I'm still not liking it much. I'll do it if I have to, but not til the summer season.
I bought one gift for myself this Xmas - nothing expensive, but this little thing has been a lifesaver! Drum roll please......a ped egg! Ladies and gentlemen, if you have callouses on your feet from running, this will save you! I had horrible callouses on my right foot (should have photographed, but it was too embarrassing). And, using this just once has gotten rid of it! I am amazed! Cost me $10, and it was the best $10 I spent on myself all year.

Wow. I think you are the first person that I've ever heard actually admit that they like their bike trainer.
I "tolerate" mine just because I'd rather ride inside for an hour or so and go slightly brain dead than have to bundle up in 10 layers and battle against cars and freezing winds for my portion of a sandy side of road. Good on 'ya! But I guess things would be different if I had a little kiddie roaming around the house.
I also used my Ped Egg for the first time yesterday! I always get little blisters on the arch of my feet, so I'm hoping that helps. I'm not as concerned about calluses and having soft pretty feet, but if it can keep me from getting blisters, then I'm all for turning my feet into a cheese grater.
G-ross!
I seriously need the Ped Egg. The sides of my feet are full of calluses! I though it was a badge of honor or something :-)
good to know that a bike trainer won't kill me!
as for callouses...i don't want to touch mine. if i did, i know i'd end up getting blisters, so i consider them nature's protection.
happy new year!
Hey! I've been thinking of getting one of those Ped Eggs. You may have convinced me!
And it sound like you like swimming about as much as I do. I do it because it's part of the triathlon, the part I get through so I can get on the bike. No triathlon coming... no swim!
Like the Ped Egg! I'm going to hunt around for one. My feet are a disgrace which is okay at this time of year - no-one sees them - but by spring it would be nice to be presentable..
I think you've done really well this year. There are always going to be things that are easier / harder for each of us but you've still done them!
Have that knee checked out by someone - best to find out sooner if you need to rest up / do some exercises...
It's good to get something that really works well for you like the ped-egg--a few years back when I had chronic sore knees I discovered Tiger Balm and it got me through my travails. Your set-up with the bike trainer sounds nice, to keep you active while you have to be at home. Here's to a great 2009 for you.
I too think it's hilarios you actually like your trainer! I just barely tolerate mine.
Good luck with the year ahead!
Indeed, most people do not like their bike trainer much (myself included). Glad to hear you do, though!
Hope the knee pain is nothing a new pair of shoes can't fix. Have you watched the KPN swim DVD yet? I'm thinking finding a better stroke may make a huge difference to you as it did for me.
